Connie Pan
Mother to Jamie Lee
(President of 1st FamChamps Council)
I realised that with the right support, youths can truly shine. Programmes like FamChamps are vital for helping kids break out of their cliques, expand their horizons, and open their minds. Jamie herself underwent a significant transformation, was deeply impacted and became determined not to repeat the mistakes she saw other teens making.
Jamie's commitment to giving back intensified. She became busier, often staying at school until 8pm, and I would pick her up every evening. Despite the long hours, I was glad to see Jamie flourishing, making new friends, and growing into a responsible young adult. However, in my own life, my own marriage had failed.
I confided in Jamie, telling her that now, with her experience and understanding, she could help other broken families too. I also encouraged Jamie to maintain contact with her father, emphasizing that we would always meet as parents to support her.
Seeing Jamie blossom into the person she is today has been one of my greatest joys. I may not have had all the answers when it came to family and marriage, but I've done my best to support and guide my children. And for that, I am truly grateful for the impact FamChamps has had on Jamie’s life.
My name is Connie, and I'm the proud mother of Jamie Lee, who is a Family champion. Reflecting on Jamie's journey, I am filled with both pride and gratitude for the incredible transformation I've witnessed in her over the years.
When Jamie was 14, she joined FamChamps Camp and visited a support centre for pregnant mothers where she encountered individuals with unwanted pregnancies and also a halfway house for those recently released from incarceration. I believe this experience was crucial for Jamie. She had classmates who were pregnant and dropping out of school, and I hoped for her to see firsthand the consequences of certain life choices.
Jamie told me afterward that she felt a strong urge to make a difference. She even decided to go back to be a mentor to her juniors at her secondary school, showing her readiness for deeper community involvement.
Opportunities for Jamie to contribute continued to grow. Upon graduating, Jamie also became President of the first FamChamps Council. We attended a dialogue on Family and its values, where we saw Samuel, who succeeded her as Council President, speak.
