To youth and young people figuring out their passion for family or navigating complex familial relationships, my encouragement is to never give up on your family. When times get rough, your family members are the ones who will be there for you, even if you think they don’t care. Perhaps the key is in discovering how you can unlock the ways for them to show or express themselves freely.

I believe my generation can make a significant difference for families in our nation by having authentic conversations about marriage and the impact of divorce on families, showing love to one another without feeling too embarrassed, and taking time to understand the differences within our families.

Everyone deserves a happy family, and while it’s normal to have conflicts and disputes, learning how to manage them through verbal and non-verbal communication plays a crucial role in keeping family harmony.

Growing up, I stayed with my mum and grandmother and shared a close relationship with them because I always saw and talked to them at home. From time to time, we’d eat together on weekends and have conversations over meals.

However, when I attended FamChamps in 2016, I wasn’t as close to my family because I was busy adapting to secondary school. Whilst navigating the transitions at school, I wasn’t aware of the transitions happening at home relationally and didn’t know how to bond with my family.

Through the FamChamps camp experience, I learnt how to better communicate with my mum and grandmother so that we can better understand each other. I also learnt about the different love languages and how to express love to them in their love languages.

In 2019, I was invited to be part of the first FamChamps Council, and together with Jamie, Elliot, and other Council members, we were given opportunities to initiate ground up activities to engage the community on family-related issues. I continue to be involved with FamChamps because the people I’ve met are very open-minded about building a better foundation for the future of their own family. It inspires me to help others improve their relationships with their families and better communicate with them.
